Wellbeing Workshop

4 March kl 10:00 - 16:00

Wellbeing Workshop to heal historical trauma and reduce stress

Background and purpose: Sami population in Northern Sweden carry a historical trauma of colonialism.
Even today, 70% of Swedish young Sami have experienced discrimination and Sami children reported lower
health-related quality of life compared to Swedish children in general. In addition, new challenges, such as
climate change, losing reindeer farming land, people moving away etc., impose more stress, if not fear.
Therefore, a wellbeing workshop for healing the historical trauma for Sami and non-Sami is timely and
needed. It may help us to build more resilience to other stress of life and to improve well-being of people
in the near arctic area of Umeå, Sweden.

Activities: This one-day workshop focuses on learning tools to deal with stress and subconscious negative
images in order to reach inner harmony and forgiveness. It includes short lectures, meditation (guided,
healing and mindful), positive affirmation, laughter yoga, mind-body connection and expressive dance.
Music will be used. Participants will be given time to share experiences after each activity.

Leaders: Two people will lead the workshop: Dr. Jing Helmersson (two PhDs with one in Physics, USA 1989
and one in Public Health, Umeå 2018) and Maria Pettersson (former emergency nurse). Jing is a researcher
in Public Health from Umeå University in Climate Change and Health area. She is also knowledgeable in
Chinese medicine, Nature and health, and with rich experience in meditation, expressive dance and laughter
yoga. Maria Pettersson has great experiences in dealing with stress through her own recovering journey
from “burning out”. She has years of experience in guided meditation, healing through singing and
expressive dance.
